Elwood Tackett Obituary

Elwood Tackett 79, of Raceland KY went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Lantern at Morning Point in Russell KY.

He was born in Greenup County KY on April 7, 1939 a son of the late Leonard & Cora Mae Wiley Tackett.

He was a retired from AK Steel, a member of Old Steam Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Elwood presented the idea of forming the Greenup County Cemetery Commission. He was the first appointee to this position. He spearheaded the project to identify twenty endangered cemeteries in Greenup County. He wrote the grants that would secure the funds from the Kentucky Attorney General’s office to restore those cemeteries and helped with the actual work of restoring the cemeteries.

Elwood was also instrumental in the Greenup County Cemetery Survey. He logged thousands of miles with his personal vehicle to voluntarily survey cemeteries, developed the Greenup County Kentucky Cemetery Database, where he entered over 37,000 names of burials in Greenup County.

Elwood was responsible for securing the Camp Swigert Historical Marker on US 23 in Wurtland. He did the research, assembled the documentation and secured donations from local military Legions and VFWs.

After the cemetery survey project was complete, Elwood volunteered countless hours in the Genealogy Room of the library, scanning the one of a kind local history and genealogy binders for preservation in case of a fire or natural disaster. He was the force behind finding the "unreachable" and "I'm not exactly sure where it's at" cemeteries of Greenup County.

He is survived by his wife Anna Marie Maynard Tackett; a son, Steven E. Tackett of Worthington; three daughters, Deborah Stewart and her husband Pete of Hilliard OH, Vicki Ratliff and her husband Rick and Tera Tackett all of Raceland; three sisters, Delores Johnson, Darlene Sadler and Wanda Pollard all of Findley OH; grandchildren, Dustin Stewart, Brittany Sharkasi, Nick Ratliff and Tyler Ratliff; great grandchildren, Shelby Stewart and Milo Sharkasi; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
