Ella Mae Huston Obituary

Ella Mae Huston

1931 – 2021

Mrs. Ella Mae Hartzler Huston, 90, of Greenup Kentucky went home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2021.

Ella Mae was born on June 12, 1931 in Van Nuys, California to the late Earl and Hattie Myrtle Hartzler and is the 8th generation descendant of the first Amish Bishop in America, Jacob Hertzler.

She graduated from Pasadena College in 1953 with a BA degree in Home Economics.  She faithfully served her family and her Lord Jesus Christ all the days of her life and was the rock and foundation for Lt. Col Vance Huston’s success in his 22+-year Marine Corps career and 10-year Greenup County High School JROTC teaching career.  When her husband, Lt. Col Huston, went overseas on three separate year-long military tours in East and Southeast Asia, Ella Mae served her country and her family by single handedly taking care of her home and her five young children.  In addition to loving and sacrificial service to her family, Ella Mae began her professional career as a substitute teacher in the Greenup County school system in 1979.  She also worked diligently as legal secretary to Greenup Attorney Roger Cantrell for several years prior to commencing her 18-year career supporting Kentucky 12th Circuit Court Judge Lewis D. Nicholls, who nominated her for awards such as a Tribute to Women and Industry. She dearly loved her church family at Greenup United Methodist Church and ministered there tirelessly as church treasurer, choir member, volunteer secretary for the weekly bulletin, and active member of the Methodist Women’s Club. In her 40+ years living in Greenup, Ella Mae was also very involved in the community and Christian ministry including serving as Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, Greenup Lions Club Horse Show secretary, Riverview Cemetery secretary, and Daughters of the American Revolution member. In her later years when Ella Mae was not able to get around easily, she continued to be Christ’s selfless servant and took on a card ministry sending out countless birthday, congratulation, thinking of you, and funeral cards to encourage others.

Ella Mae Hartzler Huston is survived by her 5 children:  Vince (Gloria) Huston, Connie (Ridge) Orr, Victor Huston, Cheryl (Tim) Colussy, Val (Juliana) Huston: 8 grandchildren; Elizabeth (Josiah) Mast, Matt (Kate) Colussy, Brittany (George) Hathaway, Megan (Corey) McWilliams, Dan (Sarah) Colussy, Sabrina (Bruce) Passaretti, Jessica Mae Huston, and Jacob Vance Huston and 6 great-grandchildren:  Lucia Colussy, Miah Mast, Sonny Colussy, Leah Mast, Caleb Mast, and Maggie McWilliams.

Funeral Services will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at the Greenup United Methodist Church by Rev. Dr. Nancy Preston.

Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery NE.
