Eric Chaffins
1981 ~ 2026
Eric Matthew Chaffins, 44, left his earthly home on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Leaving behind a life rooted in service, family, and simple joys. Born on May 15, 1981, in Ashland, Kentucky, he was the son of Datha Riffe-Chaffins and the late Raymond Chaffins. Eric was preceded in death by his nephew, Elijah Kirk.
Eric graduated from Raceland-Worthington High School in 1999 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 2002 to 2016. As a corporal and staff sergeant, he served 2 tours in Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom and one tour in the Afghanistan campaign. Over the years, he was recognized many times for his hard work and leadership, earning 3 Army Commendation Medals, 4 Army Achievement Medals, and 4 Army Good Conduct Medals, along with the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and multiple service ribbons. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge, and Expert Marksmanship Badge—honors that reflected his skill, commitment, and the respect he earned from those he served beside.
Eric was a simple man at heart, someone who found genuine happiness in everyday things. He enjoyed watching Jeopardy! listening to music from artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eric Church and cheering on the Cincinnati Bengals. It wasn’t the big moments that defined him, but the quiet, simple ones he truly appreciated.
He loved to cook and read, and spent time sketching for fun, finding peace in the simple things. Eric carried himself with a quiet presence and a sharp mind, but he also had a natural way of making people laugh when they least expected it. Those who knew him will remember not only his humor, but the steady, simple way he lived his life—and the lasting impression he left just by being exactly who he was.
He is survived by his children, two daughters: Kelsey Sanford (Justin) of Guthrie, KY and Alexis Beheran (Wyatt) of Fort Drum, NY; a son: Jacob Ratliff (Makala Harra) of Huntington, W.V., his brother, Jeremy Chaffins (Tracy) of Jeffersonville, IN; his nieces, Jaden and Emmaleigh Chaffins of Raceland, KY, and his close friend and fellow service member, Thomas Cowart of White Springs, FL. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family.
His greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren, Charlie, Josie, and River—whom he lovingly called his legacy.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his love for his family, his country, and the quiet way he lived his life. Eric will be sorely missed by all of those who loved him.
