Harlen Scaggs
1929 ~ 2025
Harlen Scaggs 95, of Greenup Kentucky went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Hospice of Southern Ohio in Portsmouth Ohio.
He was born in Argillite KY on November 13, 1929, a son, of the late Willie Ben & Mary Stafford Scaggs.
He resided his last 9 months with his daughter Jackie, he joking was referred to as the King on the Hill by his neighbors and caregivers.
He retired from C&O Railroad where he worked as a Carman. He was a proud combat veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Scaggs sawmill and was a former member of the Walnut Hill Methodist Church.
He loved to raise Bee’s, gardening, going to watch the dirt track races and watching his great granddaughter, Marlee softball games. If there was bluegrass music being played or a car show to go to, he would be the first to arrive.
He was preceded in death along with his parents by his wife, Alice Lou Scaggs; three brothers, June Scaggs, Elmer Scaggs and Ernest Scaggs and three sisters, Ethel Darby, Glennah Womack and Mabel Lutz.
He is survived by two daughters, Jackie Lynn Morrison and her husband Don of Wheelersburg OH and Joyce Ann Nelson and her husband Randy of Greenup; four grandchildren, Stefanie Reeder (Sean), Allison Pistole (Josh), Melissa Donathon and Amy Boggs (Matt); seven greatgrandchildren, Marlee, Cohen, Grant, Griffin, Molly, Haley and Lucas; a sister, Evelyn Scaggs; his friend, Betty Felty along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup KY by Brother George Vastine.
Burial will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Greenup County Kentucky.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM till the time of the funeral service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
The Kenova American Legion and the U.S. Army will conduct military graveside services.
