Consistent with her personality and her wishes to ease the process of her passing, Ruth prepared her own obituary.
Ruth Cooke
1929 – 2022
Ruth June Burgess Cooke, 93, of Wurtland, KY went home to be with the Lord on Monday May 30, 2022, at King’s Daughters Medical Center surrounded by her family.
She was born in Cheap (Flatwoods), KY on April 29, 1929, daughter of the late Edward and Izetta Bays Burgess.
She began working at the age of 17 at J.C. Penney in Ironton, OH, as a bookkeeper and cashier. She was then employed at Peter Kiewit Construction Company in Piketon, OH in accounting and payroll. She retired from the Greenup County Board of Education after 25 years of service.
She raised her family in Wurtland since 1956. Ruth was a member of the Electa Chapter #3 Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was also a beloved member of the Greenup Presbyterian Church (Jack Edwards).
Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Carl Mayo Cook; son, James Burgess Cooke, who could make you laugh and cry; granddaughter, Sarah Ruth Prince who was a beautiful angel on Earth for four hours; brothers, Arnold, Chester, Raymond, Ralph, Hubert, Clyde, and James; and sisters, Marjorie Craig and Garnet Ortega. It will be a big family reunion in heaven!
She is survived by her devoted daughter Karla Jean Cooke Prince (Mike Ellis) of Flatwoods, KY (when you think of me smile); grandson Charles Douglas Prince (Michael Moss) of Huntington, WV (so proud of you); granddaughter Rebecca June Norment (Breck Norment) of Lexington (a beautiful couple); two darling great grandchildren Liam and Caroline Ruth Norment; children whom she loved, Annie Richardson and Matthew and Josh Bowling; and a niece she loved like a daughter, Bea Smith (Andy). She is also leaving several nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and quilting ladies (keep cooking Belva).
At Ruth’s request there will be no services and she will be laid to rest between her husband Carl and son James at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup KY has been entrusted with her arrangements.
